Provenance

This composition is from a picture I took while on holiday this summer of 2019 on the west coast. Our provincial heritage is split between Indigenous, Irish/English, and French, and the west coast shows its Basque birthright at every turn. With an economy traditionally based on fishing, you couldn’t provide for a family without a boat. Boats were built, guarded, maintained, and the small ocean-going open boats are very similar across the province. But the French barques have much more elegant lines than the more ponderous dories built on English template. There is just that French Flair - a je ne sais quoi. These two sit on the same haul out, and if you look closely, you may see evidence of a socioeconomic juxtaposition.  The original is 16 x 20 acrylic on canvas.
